Cancer

Most cancer diseases manifest themselves with advancing age. The risk of cancer may be reduced by a healthy life-style. At Anti-Aging treatments strategies of cancer prevention should therefore be taken into account.

In the organism cancer cells might be formed permanently by mutation. These cancer cells should be identified and eliminated by the immune system. In this case the manisfestation of cancer  can be prevented by the immune system. On the other hand, cancer cells which are not destroyed by the immune system may proliferate unlimitedly, so that a malignant neoplasm arises.

With regard to Anti-Aging strategies a stimulation of the immune system may contribute to cancer prevention. Several factors depending on life style which inhibit the immune system should be avoided. Moreover, a healty nutrition is important to cancer prevention. Radicals can especially cause malignant mutations. Radical scavengers therefore are also protective with regard to cancer.

Essential components of a preventive treatment are:

  • Physical activity and stamina training measured out well
  • Coping with stress
  • Sufficient and regular sleep
  • nutrition with high proportions of vitamins, other radical scavengers and roughage
  • Normalization of body weight
  • Nicotine abstinence.

Several plant substances might inhibit the induction or proliferation of cancer cells (lycopen, genistein, zeaxanthin, indole, sulphoraphan and selenium). These substances are e.g. in tomatoes, water-melons, red grapefruit, soya, Torfu, spinach, chicory, mangel-wurzel, red beds, cabbage types, coconuts, sunflower seeds, mushrooms, garlic; selenium is also in eggs, salt-water fish and oysters. Genistein might also inhibit angioneogenesis in malignant tumors. Lycopen inhibits the genesis and proliferation of prostatic carcinoma. The enteral resorption of lycopen can be intensified , if tomatoes are consumed not raw but boiled or heated with oil (e.g. tomatoe sauce and ketchup).

The aforementioned substances also have effects as radical scavengers. Some else important radical scavengers are:

  • Vitamin A (in meat)
  • Vitamin C (in citrus fruits, berries, green vegetables, cauliflower, potatoes, paprika, tomatoes, muskmelons)
  • Vitamin E (in wheat, nuts, sunflower seeds, Brussels sprouts, spinach, fennel, grain, eggs, eel, prawns)
  • Alpha and beta carotene (in carrots, pumpkins, apricots, peaches, muskmelons, mango, broccoli, spinach)
  • Catechin (in green tea, grapes, grape juice, wine)
  • Resveratrol (in grapes, grape juice and wine)
  • Oligomer poanthocyanides, OPC (in grape seeds, jaw cortex extracts)
  • Allicin (in onions, garlic, leek)
  • Anthocyane (in blueberries)
  • Superoxide dismutase, SOD (in broccoli, cabbage)
  • Magnesium (in grain, nuts, sesame, wheat, beans, spinach, prawns)
  • Ubiquinone/coenzyme Q 10 (almost in all food).

These radical scavengers also might contribute to an inhibiting of the proliferation of cancer cells, moreover they might inhibit the progression of atherosclerosis and other processes occuring at higher age. Forther informations can be found in the chapter about atherosclerosis.

Additional aspects to the prophylaxis of cancer:

Excessive insolation and sunburn should be avoided with regards to epidermoid carcinoma and melanoma.

Cancer of the womb may be promoted by frequently changing sex partners and genital infections (herpes genitalis).

Cancer of the mucosa in the mouth and cheek area may be induced by continuously persistent chronic irritations, if leukoplakias arise being able to degenerate malignantly when existing for many years. Also epidermoid carcinoma can result from chronic irritations of the skin in individual cases.

Chronic viral hepatitis (hepatitis B C, D) predispose for liver cell carcinoma. These types of hepatitis are mostly transmitted by unprotected sexual intercourse and blood transfusions. Vaccines are only available for hepatitis B, not hepatitis C or D.

Chronic inflammations of the stomach caused by the germ Helicobacter pylori may be taken into account as predisposition for malignant gastric lymphomas. An eradication of Helicobacter pylori therefore also contributes to the prophylaxis of these lymphomas.

Several carcinogenic noxas have to be taken into account in individual cases, so e.g. asbestos, PVC, benzene, phosphorus, coke oven gas, oaks and beech wood dusts, soot, tar, ionizing radiation.

Moreover regular examinations for early detection of cancer are an important component in the total conception of Anti-Aging strategies, because most carcinomas could be curatively treated in initial stages.
